Mark N. Shahan, Vice Chair and Bicycle Advocate on Madison's
Pedestrian-Bicycle-Motor Vehicle Commission
(PBMVC) turned up this month.
The next meeting (note Agenda Item B)
of the PBMVC is Tuesday, January 29th at 5:00 p.m. Room 260, MMB (across from City Hall).
Mark is encouraging bicyclists to appear at the next meeting to suggest the City consider terminating it's
snow-plowing experiment on the SW bike path. The public appearance process is fairly simple: just show up a
little early (4:45pm), then request a public appearance form from the clerk. Your name will be called, and
you then sit down at the table and make your statement. After that, members of the committee can ask you questions.
If you would prefer, you can also send a message to David Dryer (ddryer@ci.madison.wi.us)
in Traffic Engineering with your comments.

The weather was great for a ride! About 10 riders showed up.
We decided to head over to the SW bike path tonight and check out the snow removal experiment on the path.
The City decided to try plowing half the path for bicyclists, and leave the other half available for Cross Country Skiing.

There were still signs of packed snow and ice when we got to the SW bike path.
One obvious problem you can see from this picture is that once a bicyclist is out
of range of the lighting they cannot easily see ice patches along the path.
If a bicyclist is not looking out (because they are out for a joy ride on
the SW path one evening, but don't normally use this path) they could easily slip on this ice.

Here is a nice close-up of the snow still on the path. This shot was taken
after a pretty serious thaw, where most snow elsewhere has already melted.
Most bicyclists are not going to expect to see snow here unless they regularly use this path.

After the group split up at the end of the SW bike path, a crack squadron of Critical Mass riders decided to try out the tunnel under the enemy citadel.
