The weather was great for a ride and the traffic was light, yet we didn't get much of a turnout this month - 6 or so riders. It is time to start actively flyering again! The more riders, the more fun this will be for everybody!
Here is Darin Burleigh! Darin is Madison's Bicycling Community Pages web master. He has ridden in the suburbs of Chicago-land, which has informed his feelings about urban sprawl.
After some indecision, the group decided to ride down Willy St. then check out the Isthmus bike path detour that everyone has been grumbling about on the Bikies ListServ.
The City decided to schedule the sewage line replacement before the East Main street repaving because it was assumed that most bicyclists only ride in the summer.
The problem is that the detour for the path is along East Main street.
Here is the sign directing bicyclists to turn onto East Main St. That's right, Madison, the 2nd most bicycle-friendly City of it's size, wants bicyclists to use this street!
And here is what East Main looked like that day...
It looks like some of the major holes have been patched in places.
Imagine having your attention somewhere else as the front wheel of your new touring bike digs into this crack!
Here is a shot that gives some size perspective on the magnitude of the problem.
Robbie had the great idea of tying some flyers to her handlebars to facilitate mobile-flyer handout! The flyers have a hole punched in them. The hole is close enough to the edge of the flyer so that they tear off easily.
We headed up to the Union to have a beer with the Friday night bikies gathering. Before we went inside Robbie handed out flyers. Will this guy be at the next ride?
Here is how it is done... If you want more riders in the mass next month, then it is time to start handing out flyers every day!

A replica of Robbie's flyer is available here. Print it, or design your own! Have you checked out all the materials on the promotional materials page recently?
