Michael Neuman (with the flags on his bike) organized an Earth Day Bike Ride.
He registered for a parade permit with a fixed route, and agreed that bicyclists would ride single file.
Seeing as this was an organized ride we promptly left at 4:30pm!
Trouble was evident early on. It appears that several bicyclists didn't know about the "ride single file" convention for the ride.
Just at Park Street we came across a picket of Kinko's. Two workers had been fired recently - supposedly for being union.
Bicyclists took an unexpected detour and joined the picket line for a loop or two...
Our presence seems to have been appreciated.
Because we were getting off schedule, Michael decided to lead the group along the rest of the route.
The problem was, many bicyclists wanted to choose their own route.
A nice Earth-Day Message...
The renegade group decided to ride back into town along East Johnson.
Not far along the unscheduled detour, a Parking Enforcement Officer took notice of us.
At this point most riders were simply enjoying the ride.
The cyclists turned up East Johnson, and the Parking Enforcement Officer followed...
Hey, what's up with that red car???
An enhanced shot of the Parking Enforcement Officer valiantly rising above the call of duty to protect something...
The Bicyclists now started taking an interest in the goings on behind us...
More became curious...
Curiouser and curiouser...
The Bicyclists turned right on Bount, and still the Parking Enforcement Officer followed.
Surely he didn't think we were going to park illegally???
Doesn't he know that a whole slew of illegally parked automobiles awaits him along Johnson?
Little did I know, while I was legally occupying the left lane and keeping up with the flow of traffic,
that my actions were being watched in a rear view mirror...
As we approached the Capitol Square I heard sirens. The rest of the cyclists had rounded the corner, while I patiently waited for a nice shot...
Then this charming gentleman (who hates to be photographed) pulled up and popped out of his car.
He told me he might have to take my camera away unless I stopped filming him.
After taking down some information from the Parking Enforcement Officer, He handed me a wonderful piece of pink paper.
And here it is...
Here's a nice shot of what I found when I rounded the corner.
Note the Parking Enforcement Officer in the foreground, probably with a warm feeling inside,
knowing he has helped the world somehow.
1 Car... 2 Cars... 3 Cars...
4... 5...
6...
7...
I wasn't the only one counting. This onlooker thought one or two cars would do just as well.
His friend surveys the scene, and has some concerns about how his tax dollars are being spent.
Two of the cyclists were seated in the back of a Police car when I arrived. It is unclear why.
But soon they were released...
And we all compared our wonderful pink slips...
And we exchanged information to help in a collective defense...
