About 65 bicyclists formed the Mass tonight!
Looks like we had a sympathizer with those "radicals" protesting the IMF/World Bank. The Sign Reads:
IMF/WB Stealing from the poorest to give to the richest. More People, Less Bank!
Off they go!
Along witha great turnout, several people distributed flyers highlighting the causes they were trying to draw awareness to.
From the Amber glow you can tell that sunset is getting earlier and earlier. Next month most of the ride is likely to occur after dark. That's OK, because October's ride will be a rolling Halloween Party. Come in costume!
This cyclist, engaging in the legal act of passing on the left, sports a sign that reads:
U.S. Military Equals Global Terrorism.
Bicyclists trying out a little "traffic calming" along East Johnson. It seemed to work!
Johnson Street seemed a lot more pleasant during the calming experiment. Several cyclists were caught smiling.
After a jaunt up First Street, we turned left onto Washington. At the urging of a vocal group of conscientios participants, the mass cleared the leftmost lane, allowing Motor Vehicles to pass.
We zipped down Milwaukee, then turned right on Fair Oaks.
Several Motorists grew dangerously impatient and passed the Mass with oncoming traffic closing in. Note the Glass Nickel Pizza delivery car, after passing the mass on the left, also passing oncoming traffic on the left. This car ended up turning right into the Glass Nickel parking lot 2 blocks ahead. The ease by which this type of recklessness is precipitated by Critical Mass is a sad commentary on one of the many dark sides of car culture.
Fortunately, no collisions occured, and we subsequently turned onto Atwood Avenue.
More Atwood Avenue.
The Tandem!
As we entered Monona, this police officer passed by and circled around to check us out.
Since this is the first time we encountered Monona Police, massers decided to U-Turn and exit their jurisdiction.
Passing by "Bongo Video", where you can rent WE ARE TRAFFIC. If you have not see it, try it!
Just after sunset heading down Willy St.
The Car Free Days Mural on Mother Fool's was still visible.
Note the two squads in back of the Mass. At this point the Mass split - some heading under Monona Terrace, some heading to the Terrace at the UW.
About 10 cyclists heading to the UW Terrace passed through state st.
